TOWNSHIP OF LANGLEY, BC — September 2nd, 2022 — The Contract with Langley Team will save and expand Active Beyond the Bell recreational program.

Yesterday morning parents were notified that the Active Beyond the Bell program that they rely upon was cancelled at three schools in Aldergrove and one in Murrayville with only a few days notice before the start of the school year. The CWL Team feels that it's unacceptable, and that this recreational program needs to be developed and expanded in partnership with Langley School District 35.

“Having Active Beyond the Bell cancelled at all three elementary schools that service the Aldergrove Community has many families scrambling to find alternative arrangements for child care and after school programs. With school starting next week, this short notice is extremely frustrating,” said Cashmere Roder, President, Aldergrove Community Association and Executive Member, Shorteed PAC.

Cashmere added, “This program is important to our community and residents hope a solution can be found. We hope that the Langley School District, the Langley Township Staff and Mayor and Council can work together to support our recreation and the families who rely on these resources.“

Expanding and better operation of recreational programs for Langley's youth is critical need within the Township of Langley as it continues to grow. The current situation with the Active Beyond the Bell program highlights the need for a new team on Council to priortize this program prudcently and responsibly for the future, and have more programming available youth after school.

During a time when many families are still dealing with pandemic stress and financial insecurities, the choice to cut this programming a few days before the new school year is unacceptable. We want to support and expand recreational programs like these for families.

I have been contacted by many parents about the cancellation of Active Beyond the Bell. The frustration and stress that this is causing families is just not ok.

As a single parent who needed to work and who raised children without any extended family available to help, I relied on recereational programs like these. It's devastating for families to have this program cut without notice.
