TOWNSHIP OF LANGLEY, BC — August 31st, 2022 — Sarb Rai will be running with the Contract with Langley team for School Trustee along with Holly Dickinson and Joel Neufeld in the upcoming October 15th, 2022, local elections.
Sarb has been a federal public servant for 22 years, has three school aged children who all attend school in Langley. She graduated from Douglas College with a diploma in Criminology. Her experience working within the federal government has given her a sound knowledge of the legal system and provided her with the skills to mitigate high stress situations and facilitate conflict resolution. These are tools that she will bring to her role as a school trustee.
Sarb has lived in the Township of Langley for 18 years. Her three children have spent the entirety of their school careers in Langley's public school system.
Sarb's son was diagnosed with Autism at the age of five, while he is in kindergarten. His diagnosis resulted in Sarb building close relationships with his teachers and EAs throughout the years. However, as an involved parent she has also experienced some challenges when dealing with school administrative teams, this was a big part of her decision to put her name forward for School Trustee within the Township of Langley.
"As a parent of a child with special needs, I want to have confidence that when my son graduates he will have the skills needed to continue his education or achieve sustainable employment," she said. She added, "Educators are doing the best they can with resources available to them. However, at times it feels like kids with special needs are being pushed through the system so long as they check the boxes on their ILP. I want to make it better for them and their parents."
"Sarb has been an incredible community member who avidly works toward finding solutions on how to better support our children and youth. Seeing an honest, integral, and passionate person putting children first is exactly what I want to see more in the community," Jadyn Mclean, a Brookswood resident and an Aboriginal Reaching Home Youth Support Worker.
"I've known Sarb for 10 plus years. Our daughters became fast friends and that continues as our kids are now in high school. Throughout those years, Sarb has faced many challenges within the school system as one of her children required special assistance and another child faced excessive bullying. I fully endorse Sarb taking on this new challenge as a school trustee and know she'll prioritize the interests of our kids above all else," said Valli Jones, a Brookswood resident and A Director of Client Experience at a large BC employer.
Sarb is also passionate about finding solutions to the bullying challenges we have in schools. "I believe that kids need to be thoroughly educated on the impact that bullying can have on a person’s mental health. We need to encourage leadership and help our youth to understand the severe impact these acts can have on their peers," she said.
Sarb looks forward to discussing the big issues with members in the community in the weeks ahead. The Contract With Langley full Plan for Schools will be released in late September.
We need parents like Sarb on our Board of Education, with direct experience of some of the system's challenges and great ideas to make it better for students that need extra help.— Holly Dickinson
