TOWNSHIP OF LANGLEY, BC — August 22nd, 2022 — Barb Martens will be running with Councillor and Mayoral candidate Eric Woodward and the Contract with Langley team in the upcoming October 15th, 2022, municipal election.
Barb has worked in public service for 29 years, spending the last 20 years as a Constable with the Vancouver Police Department.
Barb decided to run for Council after witnessing the recent violence in our community. She has the utmost respect and is grateful to her RCMP colleagues who courageously ran into danger without hesitation.
Barb lives in Walnut Grove with her two children, is a graduate of Trinity Western University and holds police academy certification from the Justice Institute of British Columbia. She is the only two time recipient of the BC Borstal Association awards.
"The loss of life and sense of security felt by all in our community is truly awful and I think my unique experience with both public safety and a deep concern for people often excluded in our society will bring a unique experience to heal our community and sense of safety,“ Barb Martens said.
"I firmly believe that it is only through intentional connections and relationships that we foster respect, collaboration, dignity, a voice, and improved quality of life for all members of our beloved community," she added.
Barb has received numerous awards for efforts with the Vancouver Police Department which were focused on community building and homelessness.
"Constable Martens is very well suited to the role of liasing with the community agencies as she is a great communicator and mediator and understands the challenges faced by organizations serving those who suffer from mental illness and addiction. She has always been friendly and professional, and has treated not just the staff at the Bosman, but also the residents with the utmost respect,” said Jeff West, Project manager, Bosman Hotel Community.
Barb joining the Contract with Langley team is a huge asset. Her experience in policing, especially in dealing with the homelessness challenges, will be an invaluable asset to our communities.— Tim Baillie
